The Cowboys 1959-1960

This photograph taken in 1959 at Ibstock Working Mens club.

Left to right- Harold Towers (Tag)-guitar, Dave Parry-guitar, Malcolm Baines-washboard,  Keith Smith (Twiggy)-guitar, Ivor Haynes-drums, Mick Shepherd-accordion, Barry Pike-Tea chest Bass.

This photograph dates from 1959 and is one that I had lost until I recently discovered that it had been published on another web site. I can't now recall which site but would like to pay credit to whoever kept the photograph and had the foresight to publish it. It was taken on the stage at Ibstock Working Mens Club, Leicestershire.

We then played at the Whitwick Labour club and won their talent competition in 1959 and afterwards at the DeMontfort Hall in Leicester.

It was an era when skiffle ruled and was performed with a mixture of manufactured and homemade or improvised instruments such as the wash-board played with thimbles and tea chest bass (a broom handle and string attached to a wooden case used for exporting tea). Skiffle became popular in England for a short period in the late 1950s, when it was played by such artistes as Tommy Steele, The Vipers and Lonnie Donegan.

This band had a very short life and was put together primarily for the 1st Ibstock boy scouts gang show. However it served to inspire the band members to play the pop music of the era.
